 Grey Literature

What is Grey Literature?

Grey literature is defined as follows:  "That which is produced on all levels of government, academics, business and industry in print and electronic formats, but which is not controlled by commercial publishers." (Fourth International Conference on Grey Literature, Washington, D.C., October 1999.)  Grey literature publications can include the following materials:

  • Reports
    • Pre-prints
    • Preliminary Progress and Advanced Reports
    • Technical Reports
    • Statistical Reports
    • Memoranda
    • State-of-the Art Reports
    • Market Research Reports
  • Theses/Dissertations
  • Conference Proceedings, Conference Papers and Posters
  • Technical Specifications and Standards
  • Datasets
  • Clinical Trial Data
  • Non-commercial Translations
  • Bibliographies
  • Technical and Commercial Documentation
  • Government Reports and Documents
  • And more

Because of the non-conventional, often ephemeral nature of grey literature, it can be difficult to locate and obtain.  Often, grey literature is not indexed or included in conventional databases and so must be sought out, generally on the web, but sometimes directly from the researchers or organizations producing the materials.

Why is Grey Literature Important?

There are various reasons why grey literature is important including the following:

  • Vital for developing a more complete view of a specific research topic
  • Key when producing a systematic review  and for evidence synthesis
  • Good source for data and statistics
  • More detailed reports due to no publisher-enforced length for the document
  • Limits publication lag between production of data and publication in a journal
  • Eliminates positive result bias of journals and allows negative results to be made public

Grey literature generally has more breadth and depth than what is typically found in a journal article.  For instance, a thesis may contain data that was never included in the journal article that is ultimately published using the thesis data.  Datasets provide much more information than will ever be included in a journal article destined for a scholarly publication.  In addition, grey literature is becoming increasingly more accessible via the web on government websites, organization/association websites or institutional repositories/libraries.

 Find Grey Literature

How to Find Grey Literature

Since grey literature is not generally indexed in conventional databases, your search may start with locating organizations or associations that are likely to publish the type of information in which you are interested.  Search the web for:

  • Government Agencies
  • Advocacy Groups and Private Agencies
  • Industry, Trade or Professional Organizations
  • Grey Literature Gateways
  • Academic  or Institutional Libraries/Repositories

Each organization or entity will have its own unique search interface, so you will have to adapt to each as you explore the options for locating information.  There are many sites that act as gateways to grey literature and others that provide access to large datasets (such as government websites).  You will find a list of some of these sites under the G-L Resources tab on this pathfinder.

To make the most effective use of the grey literature, it is important to narrow your focus.  Ask yourself the following:

  • What is your audience?  Who are your stakeholders?
    • Government?
    • Academic?
    • Professional Organizations?
    • Commercial?
  • What kind of material are you interested in obtaining?
    • Theses/Dissertations?
    • Conference Proceedings?
    • Reports?
    • Statistics/Datasets?
  • Is there a specific time period for your material?
    • Historical?
    • Current?
  • Are you limited to a specific population or geographical area?

Once you have determined your specific needs, you can begin exploring the available resources for data and other materials.  The list of websites under the G-L Resources tab on this pathfinder should give you a good starting point.
