Annotated Bibliography: Types of Annotations

This guide will help you learn what annotated bibliographies are and how to write and format your annotated bibliography for class.

What Types of Annotations are Used in Annotated Bibliographies?

There are three types of annotations you can use in your annotated bibliography. They are:

  • Descriptive annotations describe what the source is addressing, what issues are being looked at, and other special features that supplement the text (appendices, etc.).
    • Does not include evaluation or criticism of the source.
    • Synthesizes prior research about a topic.
  • Informative/Summative annotations summarize the content by including the hypothesis, methodology, and conclusion in the summary.
    • Does not include evaluation or criticism of the source.
    • Summarizes the way in which outcomes have been studied and documented.
  • Evaluative/critical/analytical annotations evaluate the content of the source by focusing on strengths/weaknesses and the applicability of conclusions to your research.
    • Detailed analysis and critical assessment of the research on your topic.
