Artificial Intelligence (AI): Ethical Considerations

Generative AI: Ethical Considerations

1) Academic Integrity:   Generative AI has the potential to violate academic integrity.

2) Environmental Issues: Generative AI requires an enormous amount of power to run. This increases demand for natural resources such as water and electricity.

3) Misinformation: Generative AI has the ability to easily and quickly spread false information. AI may generate content that sounds accurate but is completely false or misleading. This is called a hallucination.  Always be sure to fact check when using AI. You might be using and spreading false information!

4) Copyright:  AI is evolving so quickly that existing copyright law has struggled to adapt.

5) Data Privacy: Protection for user's data and lack of consent from creators whose work was used to train AI tools is an ongoing issue.

6) Lack of Context: AI does not understand meaning or emotion the way humans do. Content produced by AI may reflect bias.

7) Citations:  AI may fabricate citations or research works that do not exist.
