College Success : Test Taking

Resources to help learn how to successfully navigate through the college experience.

Test Taking

Scantron Test

Professors use tests as a way to gauge student learning. These are opportunities to show your professor that you understand what you have learned.

Studying for Tests:

  • Find a quiet place to study that will help you relax.
  • Plan ahead so that you know when to use campus resources such as tutors, writing centers, or library study rooms.
  • Analyze past tests to see what concepts are your strengths and weaknesses.
  • Study for small chunks of time, with breaks in between to avoid overloading your brain.
  • Create study groups so that you can exchange notes or quiz each other on the materials.
  • Use flashcards or take practice tests.

Taking Tests:

  • Review the syllabus to see when you will be tested, what type of test is going to be used, and how much of your grade is based on the test.
  • Review the test before starting and read directions carefully.
  • Keep an eye on the clock so that you know how much time you have left.
  • Return to "low confidence" questions at the end of the testing time.
  • Review your answers before submitting.
